After sell out shows at the Stables Theatre last year and a coastal tour, Bev is bringing Ploughing The Salt Sea back to its Hastings roots with some exciting new material as the show continues to evolve through further research and development.

Ploughing The Salt Sea is a solo autobiographical music theatre show, drawing on Bev Lee Harling’s recently discovered rich heritage of centuries old, fishing family roots in Hastings. The narrative, drawn from the suds of the Old Town Wash House, told through the eyes of the overlooked women, seeks to rewrite their stories back into our current consciousness through original and traditional folk song.

Bev shares precious memories, real and imagined which connect through the universal themes of secrecy, loss and finding your own voice.

She tells of a great uncle lost at sea; a dastardly grandfather running amok with the law; the decline in her own mother’s health; a great great grandmother, proprietor of several net huts down on Rock-a-Nore and knitter of their family gansey – a fishermen’s jumper, featuring their unique family motif, beautifully recreated for a new scene in the show by local knitter Helen Jones.

The incredible projections and set design from another wonderful local @simon_daw were made for this stage and you can enjoy them in their full glory next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Mother’s Day can bring a mixture of emotions for many, but essentially, it’s a celebration of the women that came before us, those that work, fought and nurtured the next generations. It’s the passing on of knowledge, stories, songs, from mothers to daughters.

Anyone familiar with Ploughing the Salt Sea, might recognise this poem, Twittens and Gutters, as it later became one of the songs for the show. Its close to my heart, and I hope you enjoy it this Mother’s Day. ❤️

Ploughing The Salt Sea is coming back to Stables Theatre, where it all began, for 3 nights only 21st-23rd March.

If you’ve not seen it yet, it’s a story of self discovery, of Mothers and Daughters, secrets and shame. Hidden family history, and tales of Hastings of old. It’s emotional and uplifting, the perfect night out with your mum.

If you have already caught the show during our recent tour of the South, we strongly recommend taking it in again on the stage it was designed for, with an extra scene, thanks’ to our friends @HastingsStorytellingFestival.

With International Woman’s Day and Mother’s Da

With International Woman’s Day and Mother’s Day so close together this year, I wanted to honour and celebrate all women and mothers with this previously unreleased video for a song from my last album, Little Anchor.

All about my Mum, the cycles of life and honouring motherhood, it was inspired whilst researching Ploughing the Salt Sea and filmed in Hastings, at some spots which mean a lot to me, my mother and the women of our family who grew up here for generations.
